Solvang announced that it equipped its vessel Clipper Eris with a full-scale carbon capture facility ready for pilot testing.
The project is a collaboration effort between Solvang, Wärtsilä, MAN Energy Solutions, and the research institute SINTEF. Over the past few months, Clipper Eris has been in dry dock for a full retrofit to equip the vessel with onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) system. According to Solvang, this is “the world’s first” ship equipped with a full-scale carbon capture facility capable to capture 75 % on a transatlantic voyages.
In addition, the project team presented the project in Singapore on 16 January and the vessel leaves the docks at Seatrium admiralty yard early February for pilot testing.
CO2 can be recycled and used in land-based industries, but the global infrastructure for discharge for shipping needs to be developed fast. In addition, IMO must implement global regulations with benefits and penalty schemes for achieving the set goals.
